About The Book:
Paul Arden was the executive creative director for Saatchi & Saatchi from 1987 to 1992. During his 14 years there, he not only handled major accounts but he also wrote three very influential books. I picked up It’s Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want to Be back in February and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to read.
It’s Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want to Be talks about everything from advertising to networking. The book dispenses no nonsense advice in a clear and concise manner. Here’s an excerpt from the book:
Don’t be afraid of silly ideas
We all get mental blocks.
We need to get unblocked.
The way to get unblocked is to lose our inhibitions and stop worrying about being right.
The comedian John Cleese puts it rather more eloquently, “High creativity is responding to situations without critical thought” (playfulness).
If you are in a deadlock here are a couple tricks you might try.
- Do the opposite of what the solution requires.
- Look out the window and whatever catches your eye, a bird, a television aerial, an old man on crutches or whatever, make that the solution to your problem.
This book is small (127 pages) and a fast read (approx. 20 minutes), with big print and lots of quirky photographs. I find myself coming back to this book over and over again for inspiration and motivation in any project I take on. Paul Arden covers so many things using different examples of his work in the UK. Though the language in the book is geared towards the UK, make no mistake – this book is useful no matter where you are in the world.
Good luck! Don’t forget to re-tweet to win!
