I think it is so important that the media tell us 'how it is' now, because the Internet has changed the practice of PR dramatically that I believe what's being taught now might not be applicable tomorrow. I have been steering my clients to try and make their own sites the source of info so that there is less writing for me to do, although writing as a form of pitching is still so important.
