Every once in a while, you may find yourself stuck in an odd situation where you don’t know how to respond. These One Minute Manner posts are designed to help you out of those awkward moments!
Today’s Lesson: The Bill.

The Dreaded Bill
Do you…
A) Reach for the bill and offer to pay it yourself?
B) Ignore it, and hope your boss pays it?
C) Reach for your wallet and ask, “So, how much do I owe?”
D) Reach for the bill and say “I’ve got this one.”
If you answered C or D, you’re on the right track! Ignoring the bill will only force you to sit with your superior in an awkward silence. Acknowledging the bill shows that you’re not expecting your boss to pay for your half of the meal and also takes the pressure off both of you. Offering to pay for “this one” implies that there will be future lunches with your boss. And hey, if you’re having lunch with the boss, you’re doing something right!
