I’ve never actually attended a meetup before, but this particular meetup is one I really wish I attended.
Tyler Wright of Megawatt PR did a quick talk about how he managed to get national headlines for small companies like 1-800 Got Junk? and Frog Box. There was a question and answer period at the end, and someone was kind enough to film the entire 10 minutes of his talk and post it up on youtube.
Tyler talks about three different things everyone can do to help get better PR for their company. The points are as follows:
- Build PR into your campaign in the beginning before everything else.
Tyler tells us that it doesn’t matter what kind of company you have – everything your company does, from how you ship an item to HR practices, has the potential to get media coverage. - Find the story behind the story.
Think about what reporters look for. PR isn’t about the wonder product, or how great your customer service is, instead, look for the story that inspires and educates. Stuff that could be discussed at the dinner table. Things that you can bring up conversationally. Tyler also encourages people to call reporters and take risks. - Find the “Cool Factor”
Tyler points out that certain companies like Virgin, Redbull, Lululemon, etc. have details that the media wants to cover. Their brands took into consideration the “cool factor”, as Tyler puts it, and tells us to watch out for details that make your company stand out.
Tyler encourages us to take big risks, do something big and crazy, and not to be mediocre. Very awesome tips, and I really wish I didn’t miss this meetup!
